PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

1. Develop strong self image and sense of pride and respect
among players, staff, and school
a. Poise and confidence through total preparation
b. Close relationships with each player
c. Dress code at school, practice, on the road, and to games
d. Shirts, shorts, bags, jackets, sweats with school logo
e. Players take responsibility in promoting program
f. "Hallway Happiness" :players and staff greet others in hall
g. Game's an" event" (music, band, pep squads, contests, etc.)
h. Faculty, staff, and alumni involvement
2. Accomplishments
a. Goals attained by performance "each possession"
b. Compete for division title
c. Contend for league championship
d. Most respected team in geographical area
e. Defeat rivals
f. Individual recognition for as many players as possible
g. Direct result of daily efforts working towards team goals
3. Promote the program and the school
a. Close working relationship with media(stats, interviews, etc.)
b. Media guides, programs, etc.. Players share responsibilities
c. Active in the community
d. Summer camp(players work)
e. Clinics involving the entire staff for coaches and/or players
f. Local youth leagues [NJB, ARC, etc.]
g. Alumni game or 3 on 3 tournament
h. Speaking appearances at banquets, youth ceremonies, etc.
i. Help as many players as possible reach the next level
j. Help former players get jobs, coaching and otherwise

STAFF PHILOSOPHY
1. Knowledge
a. know the system inside and out
b. have answers ready on the spot
c. understand the "how & why" of the total system
d. develop confidence of the players
2. Organization
a. preparation-cover all fundamentals; academic support
b. practice-daily effort is most important
c. program-total program from top to bottom
d. personell-evaluate and develop for now and next level
e. public relations-always promote the school & program
3. Attitude
a. devoted-players and coaches work for the program
b. enthusiastic-be excited for the opportunity to participate
c. positive-negative comments & emotion get you nowhere
d. respectful-respect authority ,teammates, opponents,& yourself
4. Communication
a. terminology-players must understand our language
b listen-coaches & players must listen to each other
c. respect-develop mutual respect by being fair and honest
5. Hard Work
a. games-maximum effort at all times
b. practice-practice like you are going to play & build habits
c. be at practice early for those who want or need extra help
d. off season-coaches & players must improve(drills,camps,etc)
e. scouting-thorough and organized in our preparation

OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY
RESPECT THE BASKETBALL
1.Primary Objectives
a. Uncontested layup -fast break opportunity
b. Uncontested "Power" shot (inside 10 ft.)
b. Uncontested jumpshot (10-20 ft.)
c. Open 3 pt. shot after a post touch or penetration
d. Contested "Power" shot
e. Any of the above before the defense is set
f. NO contested outside shots, unless at the end of the clock
2.Methods
a. Organized attack from the point of possession
b. Numbered fast break
c. Structured "early offense" that flows into...
d. Patterned offense emphasizing yearly strengths
3. General
a. Put players in best positions to succeed
b. Insure best players the most touches
c."Situation/Reaction" offense(read & react to the passer)
d."Specials" to cover situations
e. Counters for defensive adjustments
f. Ball reversal for a layup built in
g."Set" should not give away the play
h. Players must understand time and score
B. OFFENSIVE GOALS
1. Shoot 50% or better
a. 0rganization ensures opportunities
b. Shot selection increases %
2. __ post touches(may vary from year to year)
a. Make the opponent play defense
b. Work from the inside out
3. 2:1 assist/turnover ratio
a. Respect the basketball
b. If your not sure he'll catch it-don't throw it
4. Make more free throws than they shoot
a. attack the basket and make them defend
b. emphasizes our defense as well

DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY
COMMIT TO THE BASKETBALL
1 .Primary Objectives
a. contest all shots (premise of all defensive rules)
b. outside shot over a hand
c. one shot only-all 5 men rebound
d. take your opponent out of their offense
e. cause a turnover
2.Team Defense- 5 men playing the ball
a. prevent penetration
b. pressure on the ball
c. deny penetrating passes
d. weakside diagonal-one foot in the lane-ready to dig in the post
e. weakside basket-middle of the lane
f. contest all shots (only man that can score is man with the ball)
g. rotate from help situations so that everyone guards a man
h. rebound
3.Post Defense
a. high post is played like a perimeter player one pass away
b. low post weakside is like any weakside player ready to check
c. low post strongside-3/4 high side when ball is above FT line;
full front in the "Red Zone" ;behind in the "Smile"
DEFENSIVE GOALS
1.Best in the League, Area, & Division characterized by lowest opponents field goal %
b. contest 90% of all shots
2.Force Twice as Many Turnovers as We Commit
a. takes into account different tempo games
b. we want a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio at our offensive end
3.Make More FT Than They Shoot
a. limits our fouling
b. offensive & defensive goal combined
4. 40% or Less Opponents Field Goal%
